Kerry Royle is a contemporary Canadian artist working in oil, exploring landscape, memory and the passing of time.
Raised in rural Ontario near Algonquin Park, she studied Fine Art at York University and spent years living and working in the United Kingdom, exhibiting and undertaking commissions in both countries. Her work has followed that path: from detailed architectural scenes on paper in London, to abstracted Scottish landscapes in oil, and now to the Ontario landscapes of her childhood.
Her paintings are less concerned with depicting a particular place than with the way places are remembered. Through layered paint, scumbling and softened forms, familiar scenes become atmospheric and fragmented, somewhere between recollection and reality. Since returning to Canada and becoming a mother, her practice has turned to home and belonging, and to places that change, or that we change away from.
